Richard E. Meiers is a native of Illinois. He graduated from DePaul University as a distinguished military graduate in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps and attained the rank of Colonel during his 30 year career. He obtained his Masters Degree in Hospital Administration from Baylor University.

Mr. Meiers assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Healthcare Association of Hawaii on July 9, 1990. He is presently serving as a member of the Hawaii Health Council; Rotary Club of Honolulu; Aloha United Way; Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Board of Directors; Chairman, Organ Donor Center of Hawaii Board of Directors; Catholic Charities Family Services Board of Directors; Governor's Healthcare/Tourism Administrative Steering Committee; Hawaii Chamber of Commerce's Healthcare Reform Committee; University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Nursing Advisory Board; Regional Policy Board 9 of the American Hospital Association; Committee on State and Metropolitan Associations of the American Hospital Association; Mountain-Pacific Quality Health Foundation Board of Directors; Governor's QUEST Advisory Board; Injury Prevention Advisory Committee and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Regents Advisory Council for Hawaii/Guam. He has also served as a member of the Governor's Blue Ribbon Panel on Health Care; the Governor's Committee on AIDS, and Vision 2000 Health Care Congress Planning Committee.

Mr. Meiers' military assignments include service as the Adjutant, 12th Evacuation Hospital, Fort Ord, California; Ambulance Company Commander and Headquarters Company Commander, 7th Medical Battalion, Korea; Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, Brooke Army Medical Center and then Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, 4th United States Army, both at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Adjutant, 6th Convalescent Center, Vietnam; Adjutant, US Reynolds Army Hospital, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Clinic Administrator, US Munson Army Hospital, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Clinic Administrator, 2nd General Hospital, Landstuhl, Germany; Executive Officer, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Medical Center, Belgium; Commander, 93rd Evacuation Hospital and then Executive Officer, General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, both at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Chief of Staff and Deputy Post Commander, Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Aurora, Colorado; and Chief of Staff, Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Meiers' awards and decorations during his military career include the Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.

He is a Diplomate of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a member of the American Hospital Association, the American Society of Association Executives and the Rotary Club of Honolulu. He was the recipient of the 1996 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award from the U.S. Army/Baylor University Program in Health Administration.

His family includes his wife, Lynn, and their daughter, Cindy, Assistant Administrator at Hale Nani Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Honolulu and Rich Jr., an Editor/Producer at KHNL-TV, the NBC Affiliate in Honolulu.
